JGrrey is a force to be reckoned with. The singer and songwriter has been slowly and steadily casting her spell over the music world since the Colors video for her song Don’t Fade blew up in 2017. On the back of her achingly cool new single Ain’t So, and it’s beautifully trippy CGI-infused video (all shot on an iPhone during lockdown), JGrrey is Bee Beardsworth’s Artist of the Week.

Where are you from?

London, born in Lambeth and then as I was growing up we moved all over London.  I feel like I’m kind of just from Earth.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

The feeling I get when someone knows me as JGrrey, because I think that moment when someone realises that I’ve written a song they like. Even if it’s “are you the girl who write Don’t Fade” or “I know you from Colors”, it’s really rewarding. It's not being known for something bullshit or crappy but for something that they really enjoy and something that they can continue to enjoy as many times as they like.

What’s your greatest strength or quality that you admire in yourself?

Right now, I can't think of one. I really can’t, haha.

What is your greatest weakness and how do you work to overcome it?

I struggle to be positive, I overcome it by being negative.

Who inspires you?

My mum and my dad. That’s kind of it they’re amazing.

What’s your earliest memory?

Potentially, I’m not sure if it’s my earliest but it’s a strong early one. When my brother and I had to share rooms, he would commentate the F1 races that Michael Schumaker would do and he would keep me up doing every bit of the voice over of every part of the race. It would go on so late into the night.

What is home to you?

My flat or my parents’ house. Wait, that's not true, anywhere my family is. By family I mean friends and family, like wherever Manga or Isabel or Caspar is. If I’ve known someone for a while and you understand me, then that’s home for me. But also, I’m quite obsessive so probably my flat just in regard to sleeping it would have to be there.

Aside from necessities, what could you not go a day without in your life?

Music. Music and conversation with people I genuinely like.

What is your favourite song and what does it meant to you?

I can’t pick my favourite song, that’s insanely hard. Ready To Die by Biggie is one of my favourite albums and that means the world to me. 36 Chambers by Wu-Tang Clan, Baduizm by Erykah Badu and Showcase by Patsy Cline.

What animal would you be, and why?

Frog… they are the ultimate animal

Is there a charity or organisation that you would like to shout-out, and what does it mean to you?

If you could have dinner with 3 people, who would they be?

Russel Brand, Amy Winehouse and Ozzy Osborne.

Aside from your new single ‘Ain’t So’, what else can we look forward to from JGrrey?

At the beginning of the year, one of my best friends died and after he passed, I realised that him (James) brought out this whole other side of me, the “you can’t tell me shit” bad bitch person. After he died, I realised I wasn’t channelling that fun exciting energy through my music, so then I decided to use JGrrey to get away with all the things that Jen can’t get away with. So honestly “what else can you expect from JGrrey?” Please expect everything and anything. The world is mine.

What is your mission statement?

To make people happy while also being happy and to keep the vibes right and not to be a prick.
